While it could be debated, many people will tell you that the interview is the most important aspect of any job search. Be it through the telephone, Skype, or in person an interview can make or break the prospects of you landing the job of your dreams. So then, what do you need to know before your interview date?
Familiarize Yourself with the Company
When starting your job search you may have done what many people tend to do when job hunting. You sent out your resume to anyone who would take it. If you’re lucky your resume made it into the prospect list of a few companies and they, in turn, have sent out a confirmation email extending an interview session to you. When you receive this email, you should start setting aside some time to do a little research. Companies appreciate it when prospective employees are knowledgeable about the company they are interviewing for. It shows a high level of drive and interest that can help to set you apart from other prospects in the running.
Be Mindful of How You Dress
The outfit, in this case, truly makes the man or woman. Clothing, whether intentional or not, is a physical indicator of the type of person you are. As such, it is important to be calculating when determining your outfit for an interview. Should you go for something more formal like a three-piece suit or dress, or would keeping your outfit casual be a better route? The factors that determine this choice will be determine by the information gathered during your initial research of the company. After all, you have no business strolling into an interview for a Fortune 500 company in a t-shirt and jeans.
Be Sure to Talk Up Your Strengths
An interview is an assessment of your viability as a candidate for the company. Be sure to emphasize your strengths. The interviewer will most likely request you to describe how you would respond to certain hypothetical scenarios or problems that you may face if you were to work for them. This is where the strengths, skills, and talents you placed on your resume will help you to shine. They, along with how you apply them to the situations, will help set you apart from other candidates.
If Applicable, Have Examples of Your Work on Hand
Depending on your career choice, examples of your work is vital. This is especially true for creative pursuits such as graphic design. Often you should have created an online portfolio that showcases your work. Be sure to place the portfolio’s web address on your resume and business cards. It is also a good idea to have physical copies of your work, up to three, that you can personally give to the interviewer. It leaves the impression that you are confident in your abilities and makes you memorable to the interviewer. Remember, the interviewer will probably see multiple people every day. It is important to use every opportunity to stand out.
