There are many television shows today that feature a cast of strong, relatable women. The cast may consist of fictional characters, but the impact they leave on viewers is anything but fictional. Here is a list of excellent shows that are meant to inspire women.
“GLOW”
In 1985 in Los Angles, Ruth Wilder,(Alison Brie), a struggling actress, auditions for a promotional wrestling program called the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, or GLOW. Wilder along with twelve other women, are led to fame by a wash up B-movie director, Sam Sylvia, (Marc Maron). This comedy-drama series by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch is based on the real-life wrestling organization. This series is available on Netflix.
“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”
The creator of “Gilmore Girls”, Amy Sherman- Palladino, makes a comeback with the new comedy-drama series, “The Marvelous Mrs, Maisel”. Taking place in 1958 in New York, it centers around a stand-up female comedian named Miriam “Midge” Maisel, (Rachel Brosnahan), who is both married and a mother to two children. After her husband chooses to leave, her life begins to spiral, and she comes to realize that she needs to have more self-confidence. This adoring comedy-drama series is available on Amazon Prime.
“Grace and Frankie”
In one sentence, this series could be described as a friendship formed out of an unusual situation. For a long time, Grace and Frankie were always rivalling with one another, until one day, both of their husbands reveal to them shocking news. As things start to drastically change around them, the women begin to rely on each- other. This series is available on Netflix.
“Agent Carter”
This series follows Peggy Carter, (Hayley Atwell), who reprises her role from the Captain America films. Taking place in 1946, Agent Carter is the only female agent in a secret spy agency. Agent Carter goes above and beyond Captain America’s love interest as she shows that women can be strong leads even without superpowers. The series is a great show to binge-watch in one afternoon on Disney+.
“Tuca and Bertie”
This animated Netflix series stars two bird women, Tuca, (Tiffany Haddish), and Bertie, (Ali Wong). Tuca is the outgoing party girl while her best friend Bertie is an anxious people-pleaser. This series addresses issues pertaining to commitment, sexual harassment, and self-deprecation. “Tuca and Bertie”showcase a strong female friendship.
